Unpopular opinion: are we watching these movies wrong?

I always thought the key to a bad movie night was picking the worst movie possible and just laughing at it. But last weekend a buddy said we should actually try to follow the plot seriously for the first 20 minutes, then give up. It totally changed the vibe, like we got invested in the trainwreck on purpose instead of just mocking it from the start. So which side are you on: go in ready to roast immediately, or try to take it seriously first for a bigger payoff?

That "commit to the serious approach but set a hard timer" thing reminds me of how we approach a lot of stuff in life. We try to give things a fair shot for a set amount of time, but we already know in the back of our heads we're gonna bail and laugh it off. It's like we're always looking for the exit sign before we even sit down, with movies or otherwise.

The trick is to commit to the serious approach but set a hard timer on it. Give it 15 minutes of real attention and then flip the switch to full roast mode once you hit that wall. You get the payoff of seeing the dumb plot twists actually matter before you tear them apart.
