PSA: spent 4 hours untangling one 6 foot HDMI cord behind my TV stand in Denver
Moved my TV stand to paint the wall in my Denver apartment and found a nest of cords so bad I could not tell which plug went where. I tried the old unplug everything and yank method and it turned into a 4 hour mess of untangling one 6 foot HDMI cord from a power strip and two speaker wires. What finally worked was unplugging one cord at a time and wrapping each with a bread tie before moving on. Took way longer than the 20 minutes I planned for. Does anyone have a trick for cords that are already stuck in a knot behind furniture you cannot pull out?
Why does it always turn into way more work than you planned? I did the same thing last spring when I moved my couch to find a lost remote and ended up sitting on the floor for two hours just staring at the mess. The worst part is when the cords are zip tied to each other, so you cannot even pull one out to see where it goes. Your bread tie idea is smart though, I wish I had thought of that before I just ripped everything apart and made it worse. What helped me was unplugging the whole power strip first so nothing was live, then tracing each cord hand over hand from the device back to the outlet. It is slow and annoying but at least you know what you are dealing with instead of guessing in the dark back there.
