I finally tried the deep litter method after swearing it would stink up my whole garage
For two years I cleared out my coop in Grand Rapids every Saturday like clockwork because I figured built up bedding would smell awful and give my six hens respiratory problems. A guy at the feed store talked me into trying deep litter last fall and honestly after 5 months of just turning it with a pitchfork the coop smells better than it did before, way less ammonia. Now I'm wondering if I should add more pine shavings before winter or if what I've got is deep enough, how thick does yours get by January?
