Hemp bedding vs pine shavings for my coop bedding swap
Last spring I switched from pine shavings to hemp bedding in my 8 hen coop after a friend kept going on about it. Honestly, I thought it was just hype until I cleaned out the coop after 3 months and saw maybe half the waste I got with pine. The hemp broke down way less, stayed fluffy, and I did not get that ammonia smell until week 10 instead of week 6. It costs like $2 more per bale but I use less of it and clean less often. Has anyone else tried switching and noticed a big difference in dust or smell?

Oh wow, that's exactly the kind of info I was hoping for. Did you notice a difference in dust levels during the first few weeks after switching? Because with pine shavings, I feel like I'm sneezing for days after a fresh change, even with the "dust free" bags. I'm curious if the hemp is really that much cleaner right out of the bag, or if it just seems better because you're not stirring it up as often. My hens have been coughing a little lately and I'm wondering if the pine dust is the culprit.
