A ranger at Mount Rogers talked me out of my own route and he was right
Back in 2019 I had my whole loop planned out on paper for the Mount Rogers area, and I was pretty proud of it. At the trailhead an older ranger looked at my map for a minute and pointed to a stretch I had picked and just said "that section stays wet till July, you'll be knee deep in mud the whole second day." So I flipped the loop and went the other way, and sure enough his way was dry the entire time. These days I use an app for everything and I miss that kind of quick local knowledge. Anyone got a go-to way to check conditions before a trip besides just calling the office?
