Warning: a guy at the Charlotte depot told me to skip the online quote and call the dispatch direct
I was at a truck stop near Charlotte last month and overheard a dispatcher telling a customer that the cheapest online quote usually triples once your car sits at the terminal. He mentioned a 10 day pickup window turning into 3 weeks for a guy shipping a Civic to Denver. Now I'm trying to move my truck from Phoenix and I don't know if I should book online or just call a smaller carrier direct. Has anyone booked straight with a dispatcher and actually gotten a fair price?
Booked direct with a dispatcher once and felt like I was haggling at a flea market, except I'm terrible at haggling so I probably got fleeced anyway. That said, calling around to a few smaller carriers got me way better answers than the online form ever did. Just get the pickup window in writing before you hand over a card.
