Warning: My buddy's 'bypass the warranty' advice cost me $900 in Denver
Last month my alternator died on my 2018 Civic at 62k miles. My buddy Jake said just take it to his guy who does cash jobs and skip the dealer warranty hassle. He charged me $450 and the car died again 3 days later. Turns out his guy used a junk yard unit and I ended up paying the dealer $900 for a proper fix plus a rental. But I gotta point out, a 2018 Civic at 62k miles should have had the alternator covered under the 5 year/60k powertrain warranty anyway, assuming you didn't void it with mods. So the real lesson here isn't just "don't trust your buddy's guy," it's to actually check your warranty coverage before you pay anyone a dime. Jake gave you bad advice on two fronts, the cash job and skipping the dealer. A quick call to any Honda dealer with your VIN would've told you if you were still in the window, and you could've saved yourself the $450 junk yard gamble too.
