Wet sanding for 12 years before a painter showed me the truth

I had this 2012 Ford F-150 in the shop last month, silver paint with a nasty run on the door. I grabbed my 1500 grit and started going at it like always, took me almost an hour. The guy from the booth next door walked over and asked why I wasn't using a stiff rubber block under the paper. I had no idea what he meant. Turns out I was just polishing the high spots and leaving waves, all those years of smooth-looking work was actually hiding a mess. Has anyone else learned a basic step way later than they should have?

Man, that hurts to read because I did the exact same thing for way too long with a foam block. Found out the hard way when a customer pointed out a wavy spot in the sun that I thought was perfect.
