Trail maintenance guy's ice auger trick saved my whole weekend

Watched the county crew drill overflow spots on the St. Croix River trail last Tuesday, and using a hand pump to push water up before freezing cut our setup time from 3 hours to about 45 minutes on Saturday, has anyone else tried pre-flooding with a pump instead of waiting for natural freeze?
