TIL stacking 40 short exposures beat my 5 minute subs on the Orion Nebula from my driveway in Reno
I used to think longer subs were always better. My mount is nothing special, an old EQ5, and I figured 5 minutes a pop was the way to pull out faint stuff. Then a guy at a star party last month told me my stars looked soft and asked how long I was shooting. When I said 300 seconds he laughed a little and said try 40 second subs and just take a ton of them.
So I did. 60 of them at 40 seconds, stacked in free software, and the nebula came out cleaner than anything I got at 5 minutes. I think my mount just drifts too much past 2 minutes and I never noticed because I was busy patting myself on the back.
Anyway, your mileage may vary depending on your mount and how dark your sky is. Curious what sub lengths other folks are using on modest gear like mine.
