A guy at the star party in Tucson said my Milky Way shots looked like soup, and he was right
Two years back I drove out to a star party near Tucson with about 40 frames of the Milky Way I was pretty proud of. An older fellow with a beat up tripod looked at my laptop screen for maybe ten seconds and said my stars were bloated and the core was muddy. I was a little hurt, but he was right. I had been pushing my ISO to 6400 so I could see the shot on the back of the camera, and that was eating all my detail. He showed me how to shoot at 1600 instead and just take more frames, then stack them later. It meant standing in the cold longer and my first few tries came out worse because I did not know how to line the frames up. After about a month of practice my shots went from soft and noisy to something I could actually print at 11 by 14. Have any of you changed your ISO habits after getting called out like that?

Stacking saved me too, but learning proper polar alignment first made way bigger difference than ISO ever did.
