My brother said asking 'why' three times is a waste of time

We were talking about fixing his car's weird noise, and he just wanted the quick fix. I told him to ask 'why' it's happening, then ask why again to get to the real cause. He said that's for work meetings, not real life, and it just slows you down. It hit different because he's usually right about stuff like this. Has anyone actually had the 'five whys' method help them outside of a job?
