Guy at a Phoenix trade show told me my ask-anything answers were too long, and he was right
Last month at a trade show in Phoenix a guy I'd just met asked me a simple question about how I got into my line of work, and I gave him a five minute answer with three side stories in it. He just smiled and said 'you know, I only needed the first sentence.' That hit me hard because I do the same thing online, writing these big long replies when a short honest answer would help way more. Now before I hit post I ask myself if the first line already answers the question, and if it does I trim the rest down. Has anyone else had someone call out how you answer questions, and did it actually change how you post?

That guy saying "I only needed the first sentence" was just being polite about wanting you to shut up, not handing you some life rule about posting. Plenty of questions actually need the extra context, and cutting everything down to one line usually just makes you sound like a jerk who doesn't care. If someone asks how you got into your work, the story is the point, and if they didn't want to hear it they shouldn't have asked.
