Bought a $40 'instant' compost bin from a Facebook ad and got 6 months of mold soup instead
Back in 2019 I saw this ad for a countertop bin that swore it turned scraps into dirt in two weeks, no smell, no work. I paid $40 for it on a Friday, told my wife it would pay for itself, and had a plastic tub of banana peels and coffee grounds rotting on our counter by Monday. The thing needed 'aeration' twice a day with a little hand crank, which I did for about 9 days, and then it just sat there getting slimy while I pretended not to notice. By week 5 there was a layer of white fuzz and a smell that reached the hallway, and my wife finally said it smelled like the dumpster behind a Subway. I dumped the whole mess behind the shed and it sat there until spring with zero breakdown, just cold and wet and gross. I've since watched my neighbor's backyard pile in Cleveland turn to black gold in 4 months using nothing but leaves and a pitchfork. So what's the deal, does anyone actually get those little bins to work, or is it all just marketing?
