Why does nobody bring up what a 15 minute tour in Cortez did to my whole view of pot shards?
I went to a small museum out in Cortez last spring and a volunteer there walked us through a table of broken pottery for maybe 15 minutes. She pointed at rim pieces and said you can read a whole village's dinner habits off the shapes and wear patterns, and something in my head just clicked. Up to then I'd been picking up shards on hikes and stuffing them in a jar on my shelf like they were pretty rocks. Now I leave every single one where it sits and just take photos with my phone next to a coin for scale. I've gone back through 2 years of old hike photos and actually wrote down the spots, and it bugs me how much I probably walked over without noticing. For folks who got into this from the field side, how do you tell a real worked edge from a rock that just looks chipped?
