Warning: That trench cut on the Roman road near York is way more fragile than it looks
I poked at it with a bamboo stick last summer and the whole section caved in, so has anyone else found that the top layer of compacted gravel is basically just a crust over nothing?

You're not wrong that the top layer is thin, but that crust is what's been holding it together for two thousand years. Poking it with a stick is like kicking a pillar at the Colosseum and being surprised when dust falls off.

Huh, fair point @jordan653. But is it really the crust holding it together, or is it just that we got used to the dust? Maybe the real danger isn't poking it, but all the people leaning on it like it's solid.
