My uncle's field note made me see excavation layers differently
Last month my uncle, who dug at Çatalhöyük in the 90s, told me that he used to sketch every soil change by hand before any photos. He said the camera flattens things, but your pencil catches the texture you actually feel. Has anyone else tried drawing their trench walls before recording, and did it change how you read the strata?

Did you actually try it on your own dig, or is this still just something your uncle told you about? Because I remember the first time I sat down with a pencil and actually mapped a profile instead of just snapping photos, and it wrecked me for weeks. The camera catches color, sure, but it misses the greasy feel of a clay lens or how a root stain kinda smears into the layer below it. So my question is, when you drew your wall, did you find yourself noticing stuff you'd walked past ten times before, or did it just slow you down? Cause for me it was both, and I still can't look at a section photo the same way.
