My daughter's 6th grade teacher told her potsherds are just old trash, and it made me rethink how I look at museum displays
My kid came home from school in Boise last Tuesday talking about a unit on ancient Rome and she mentioned her teacher called potsherds nothing but old trash. That rubbed me wrong at first until I sat with it for a few days. The teacher's point was that archaeologists find millions of broken bits and most never see a display case. Only the shiny stuff like gold coins or a full skeleton gets the spotlight at a place like the British Museum. But those plain broken pieces are what actually show how regular people cooked and traded 2,000 years ago. Now when I see a fancy artifact behind glass I wonder what got tossed in a trench to make room for it. Does anyone here know a good site or book that focuses on the everyday junk instead of the treasures?
