A field school supervisor told me I was 'digging like a loot hunter' and she was right
Last summer I did a 2 week field school in southern Utah on an old pueblo site. I was so excited to find stuff fast that I was using my trowel like a shovel, scraping through layers without recording anything. The supervisor pulled me aside on day 3 and said "you are treating this like a treasure hunt, not archaeology. You are destroying the context." That hit hard because she was totally right. I slowed way down, started measuring everything, and tagging each layer. I found way less cool artifacts after that but I understood the site so much better by the end. Now I never dig without a grid and a notebook. Has anyone else had a moment where a pro called out your technique and it completely changed your approach?
