Spent 6 years spiking every tree before I figured out I was basically injuring them on purpose
I was climbing a big silver maple in Rochester back in 2019 and a guy from the utility crew watched me spike up and just shook his head, then asked me if I'd want someone to stab me every time they came to visit. That one sentence made me rethink everything I'd been taught. Spikes are for removals and emergencies, not for pruning jobs you plan to come back to. Now I use a throw line and a friction saver on every trim, even the small ones, and my repeat clients' trees look way better after a few cycles. Anybody else get humbled by a total stranger on a job site like that?
