The week my 1993 Packard Bell finally booted DOS from a 40MB drive after 11 tries
So last Tuesday I pulled this old Packard Bell out of my dad's garage in Toledo where it sat since about 2002, and I figured it was a parts machine for sure. For three days straight I could not get it to read the hard drive, kept getting a disk boot failure, and I was ready to swap in a compact flash card like everyone on here keeps telling me to do. Then Thursday night I reseated the IDE ribbon one more time and heard that little click, and the BIOS actually detected all 40 megs of it. I ran scandisk for about 45 minutes and it found zero bad sectors, which honestly shocked me more than the boot itself. Now I have Windows 3.1 running on it and my kid thinks the flying toaster screensaver is the coolest thing he has seen. Has anyone had luck getting an old SB16 card working in one of these, or should I just leave the sound alone before I break something?
