The $80 VGA splitter that turned my retro setup into a ghost town

Bought a cheap VGA splitter off eBay to run my old Pentium II to both a CRT and a flat panel for testing. It worked for about 20 minutes, then the screen went fuzzy and the CRT started whining like a dying smoke alarm. Turns out the splitter was pulling too much current and it fried the video card's output stage. Cost me $80 total for the splitter plus a replacement ISA card after I found the original on a parts board from a guy in Ohio. Anyone else had cheap video adapters kill their vintage gear, or am I just cursed with bad luck?
