Sat in on a fan sub group in Sacramento last month and it fixed my whole watch order problem
So I went to this small anime meetup in Sacramento last month, like 15 people in the back room of a comic shop, and I mostly went for the swap table. But they did this panel thing where three people who fan sub older shows talked about how they pick what to work on, and one guy said something that stuck with me. He said he always checks the original air order before he touches anything, because release order and watch order are two totally different lists and most people mix them up. I had been putting off a long series for like 2 years because I could not figure out where to start without getting spoiled. I went home that night, looked up the air dates, and started the first episode at 11pm. I am now 22 episodes in and it finally clicks why people argue about this stuff so much. The guy even wrote the order on a napkin for me. Has anyone else had a random panel or meetup fix a watch order headache like this?

Did the guy explain why air order and watch order split apart in the first place? Because that part is what got me. A lot of older shows got aired out of order by the network, or the studio made filler episodes that got slotted in the middle to buy time, so the "official" order on paper is not the order the story was written in. Then you have prequels and side stories that came out years later, and people jam those into the middle of a first watch, which spoils stuff the original run kept hidden on purpose. So the napkin order that guy gave you probably was not just air dates, it was the order the story actually unfolds.
