Rant: people keep saying filler episodes are skippable, and that got me into an argument at my local anime meetup in Tucson
I was at a meetup in Tucson about 3 weeks ago and this guy kept telling a new fan to just skip all the filler in Naruto because it does not matter. I pushed back and he acted like I was being weird about it. Here is the thing though, most of what people call filler is not actually filler at all, it is anime original content that still fits the story, and some of my favorite moments come from those episodes. I get that nobody wants 40 episodes of training arcs, but telling a brand new fan to skip stuff before they even know what they like feels backwards. What really bugs me is that people pass around these skip lists like they are facts, and then new fans never form their own view on the show. I have rewatched a few series where I skipped the so called filler as a kid, and going back I felt like I missed a lot of small character stuff. So how do you all handle this? Do you actually skip it or do you just watch straight through regardless of what the lists say?

Oh man, you nailed it with that bit about new fans never forming their own view on the show. That is the real damage, these lists basically decide what a first watch is allowed to be before the person even hits play.
