I used to skip all the filler in Naruto but last month I changed my mind
I was that guy who skipped everything between Sasuke leaving and Shippuden, but my friend Jake made me rewatch episode 101 with him in his apartment in Austin. That episode about Kakashi's mask had me laughing so hard I cried, and he showed me a Reddit thread that explained how much character development is in those filler arcs. Now I'm going back through all 90 episodes I skipped and honestly enjoying it more than the main story right now. Has anyone else found a filler arc that totally changed how you see a character?

Yes exactly, that Piccolo episode is a perfect example! The Naruto filler with the curry of life arc or whatever it was called really changed how I saw Rock Lee. Before it was just "guy who tries hard but loses a lot" but those episodes had him clowning around with Guy sensei trying to make a spicy bowl, and it made me realize how much of his personality is just hidden behind all that serious training stuff. It's wild how the stuff that's technically not canon can sometimes give you a way better feel for who a character actually is when they're not saving the world.

Whoa, okay your friend Jake has the right idea. I had a similar thing happen to me but with the Goku and Piccolo driving episode in Dragon Ball Z, of all things. Like, here's two of the most powerful beings in the universe arguing about parallel parking and who forgot the snacks. It totally humanized Piccolo for me, made him less of this cold alien and more of a grumpy dad. I never skipped a filler episode again after that, even the boring ones.
