A guy at the Phoenix con said one thing about subs vs dubs and it's stuck with me for 3 weeks
I was waiting in the autograph line at Phoenix Fan Fusion last month and got stuck next to this older guy in a Gundam shirt. He asked what I was watching and I said I only do subs, and he just went "so you read the show, huh." Then he explained he learned Japanese in college and still watches dubs because he misses jokes when he's reading. I've been thinking about that every time I hit a fast subtitle screen now. Does that actually bug anyone else or am I just overthinking a random con chat?
That guy kind of has a point and it's the thing that bugs me most about subs. I get so locked into reading the bottom of the screen that I miss faces and fights and little background stuff, then a fast line flies by and I have to rewind anyway. Reading a show is a real thing and nobody talks about it. For me it depends on the show, like action stuff is rough with subs but slower dialogue heavy stuff is fine. You're not overthinking it, that random con chat just gave you a lens you can't unsee now.
