My 2009 MacBook Pro's power adapter melted at 2am in Minneapolis and I almost lost the whole machine
Last Thursday around 2am in Minneapolis my 2009 MacBook Pro made a weird popping sound and when I looked over the MagSafe adapter was smoking and the plastic near the connector had melted into a little puddle on my desk. I grabbed the plug and yanked it out of the wall fast, then unplugged the Magsafe from the laptop and the whole thing was hot enough that I dropped it on the floor. The good news is the laptop itself still works, but the adapter is toast and I noticed the cable insulation had been cracked for weeks right where it bends near the connector. I think the failure started months ago when I kept wrapping the cord around the adapter body instead of looping it loose, which put stress on that weak spot. Now I'm scared to buy any cheap replacement because I've heard knockoffs can fry the charging board inside the MacBook. Has anyone here found a safe third party 85W MagSafe adapter that won't set my apartment on fire, or should I just pay the crazy price for a used genuine one?
