10 year old netbook runs Linux better than my new laptop, is old hardware really the problem?

So I dug out my 2012 Acer netbook with 2GB RAM and slapped a lightweight distro on it. It boots in 40 seconds and handles browsing fine. Meanwhile my buddy's current laptop with 16GB RAM and Windows is crawling. Makes me wonder if we're all just chasing specs when the real issue is bloated software. Is it about keeping old gear alive or is the industry just making us feel outdated? Has anyone else had a moment where an ancient machine outperformed something modern and it made you question everything?
