Film spool jammed inside the tank at 2am, almost lost 36 shots

Was developing a roll of Ilford HP5 from a wedding in Portland when the spool stuck halfway onto the reel, I panicked and yanked it, that bent the film edge bad. Ended up having to unload the whole tank in the dark and reroll by feel, took 20 minutes and my hands were shaking. Salvaged 32 frames but the last 4 are wrecked with pressure marks. Anyone else dealt with stuck reels on a Patterson tank, got a trick to avoid this next time?
