The lab tech who talked me out of trashing a whole roll
Last month I dropped off a roll of expired Portra at a small lab in Portland and the guy behind the counter, maybe 60 years old, saw me wince when he asked how it was stored. I told him it sat in my glovebox through two summers and I was ready to toss it. He just laughed and said, "That's where the magic lives, kid," then offered to push it two stops for free if I let him pick the developer. He ran it while I waited and the scans came back with this crazy orange shift I never could have pulled off myself. It made me realize I've been too precious about film, always chasing perfect conditions. Now I'm wondering how many rolls I've tossed over the years that could have been saved with a push or a weird mix. Has anyone else had a shop do something like that and totally flip your mindset on expired stock?
