I keep my zone map on paper taped inside the panel door, and a new helper told me I was living in the stone age
I've been doing this 11 seasons now and every single job I run gets a hand drawn zone map taped to the inside of the can, and a kid I hired in March told me flat out that it was a waste of time and everyone just pulls it up on the app now. So here's what happened at a house up in Rockford two weeks back. The homeowner was on vacation and her sitter called because the panel was beeping and she couldn't remember the code we set. I got there and the keypad was dead, screen black, no lights. I popped the can open and pulled out my paper map and there it was, zone 4 was the back slider, zone 6 was the detached garage. Turned out a squirrel had chewed through the wire on the garage contact and the panel was just showing a fault. I had the whole thing traced and fixed in under 40 minutes because the map told me where to look. If I'd been relying on the app I would've been guessing in the dark and probably crawling around the attic for an extra hour. That paper map has saved me more times than I can count, phones die, apps log you out, and cable guys yank stuff around. Has anyone else had a helper push back on old school methods like that, and how did you settle it?
