Three years ago a lead signed off my work without looking, and I still check behind people because of it
Back in 2022 at a hangar in Bakersfield I watched a lead sign off a fuel pump swap on a King Air without ever opening the panel. He told me "it's just a pump, they all go back the same way," and I had already found a chafed wire bundle two inches from where his hand would've been if he'd bothered to look. I called it out and got the cold shoulder for a month, but I don't care because that wire was one rub away from a real problem. Half the young guys I train now think a signoff is just paperwork, and that scares me more than any bad torque value. How do you push back on a lazy signoff without becoming the guy nobody wants on their crew?
That chafed wire bundle two inches from his hand says it all. A signoff without eyes on the part is just a lie with a signature. Stay the guy who checks, the crew that hates it now will thank you later.
