Brussels sprouts at my brother's place made me question everything I knew about air frying
He threw them in with zero oil at 400 for 12 minutes and they came out crispier than mine which I've been tossing in that expensive avocado oil spray, so is the spray actually doing anything or am I just wasting money on marketing hype?

Did you check if his sprouts were smaller or drier than yours before they went in? Oil spray mainly helps seasoning stick and adds a little browning, but the real magic is getting the surface dry and letting the hot air do the work. I've had similar results with a naked basket and slightly lower temp, so the spray might be more habit than hero.
