Why does nobody mention how much better old school OCR is for receipts?

Been scanning receipts for expense reports at my restaurant and comparing the built in phone OCR vs the newer AI ones. The phone app kept messing up totals on faded thermal paper, especially from our vendor in Portland. Switched to an older desktop scanner with basic OCR software and it caught everything first try, even the smudged ones from last month. Anyone else find the fancy AI stuff overkill for simple text extraction?
