PSA: I ran two AI models on the same medical scan dataset for 3 months and one was clearly better

Everyone in my lab was pushing for the newer, flashier neural network architecture for analyzing MRI images. I set up a direct comparison using 5,000 scans from a Boston hospital, running both models for a full quarter. The older, simpler convolutional model consistently identified anomalies with 7% higher accuracy and processed scans 40% faster. The complex model kept getting confused by common artifacts. Why do we always assume newer automatically means better for AI in critical fields?

So what was the actual cost difference in compute time and power between running those two models for three whole months? That's a huge factor if hospitals ever want to use this stuff.

Wait, the cost was the same, they just ran in parallel.
