Just realized why so many old asylums have those weird hallway corners

I was reading a forum post from a retired nurse who worked at the Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in New Jersey back in the 80s, and she mentioned the angled walls were designed so patients couldn't hide from staff during checks. That got me thinking about all the other small design choices in abandoned hospitals I've photographed, like the door heights and window placements. Has anyone else looked into the original building codes or purpose behind specific features in places you've explored, or do you just shoot whatever catches your eye first?

Half the time those "weird" corners are just cheap construction or bad renovation work, and people read way too much into it looking for ghost stories. If you actually pull up old building specs, you'll find most of those angles were about fitting plumbing or saving money, not mind games.
