Drove 2 hours to an old school in Gary, Indiana and picked the gym over the classrooms
I finally got out to Gary, Indiana last Saturday to shoot the old Emerson school before they tear it down. I only had about 40 minutes of good light, so I had to pick between the classrooms with all the desks still in them or the gym with the collapsed roof and vines coming through the floor. I went with the gym and those green vines wrapping around the basketball hoops came out unreal. The classrooms will have to wait, but I keep wondering if I picked wrong since the demo crew was already parked out front. Has anyone shot there and know if the desks are worth going back for?
That line about the "green vines wrapping around the basketball hoops" is exactly why I would not beat myself up over the choice. I read a blog post from a guy who shot Emerson maybe five years back and he said the gym was the one room that felt totally overtaken by nature, like the building was turning back into woods. The classrooms with desks are cool but from what he showed, its mostly peeling paint and soggy books, not the same kind of wild look. You had 40 minutes of light so you made the call that gave you the shot, that is just how it goes when demo is already sitting out front. If the crew was parked there, the desks might already be gone by now anyway, so dont stress it.
