That 1956 issue about washing machines made me appreciate the old spin cycle

I found a stack of my grandma's magazines from 1956 last week, and one ad for a washing machine bragged about a spin cycle that hit 1,140 RPM. My current dryer takes 90 minutes, and that ad got me thinking. Folks back then didn't have 40 settings, just one dial and a timer, and they made it work with less. I spent an hour flipping through the pages, and it hit me that we don't need half the buttons we think we do. Has anyone else dug through old ads and felt a weird respect for the simple stuff?

My aunt still has her 1950s washer in the basement, and it works better than my new one. Sometimes I wonder if we traded real progress for a bunch of blinking lights.
