Shoutout to the neighbor who gave me her mom's 1953 Betty Crocker cookbook after the estate sale in Toledo
My neighbor pulled up last Friday with a cardboard box from her mom's house in Toledo and handed me a 1953 Betty Crocker Picture Cook Book with the red cover still on it. She said the estate sale guy only offered $4 for it and she figured I would want it since I collect this old stuff. I've been paging through it all weekend and the section on jellied salads is wild, there's a tomato aspic ring with olive slices that I want to try just to see if it's as bad as it looks. The weird part is the handwritten notes in the margin, someone named Dot wrote 'too sweet, halve the sugar' next to the fudge recipe back in 1956. Has anyone else found a cookbook with family notes in it, and did you actually test the edited recipe to see if Dot was right?
Old cookbooks are really just diaries with recipes stuck in them. People wrote down their fixes back when cooking was a daily chore, so those notes are the real family history. Dot probably knew what she was talking about, so test the fudge with half the sugar and see.
