Question about using plumber's tape to stop a drip under the kitchen sink

That Family Handyman article said to use three wraps max. It actually works on plastic threads too which surprised me. Just wrapping it the right way is the most important part.

Totally swear by that stuff. I had the same slow drip under my bathroom sink last month and a few wraps of plumber's tape on the threads stopped it cold. The key is wrapping it the right way, you know, following the direction you'll screw the fitting on. Saved me a huge headache and probably a bigger water bill. I keep a roll in my junk drawer now just in case.

Isn't that only for threaded connections, not the pipe itself?
