Had a similar chat in Lisbon last year. I started putting more money into local spots instead of chains, and made a point to learn some basic phrases. It felt like a small step but people seemed to appreciate the effort.

Isn't it crazy how much that small effort matters? I did the same thing in Mexico City and the vibe was just totally different when you try. Makes the whole trip better for sure.
