Question about how I book shore excursions now vs 5 cruises ago

I used to book every port excursion through the cruise line the second they opened, and I'd stress for weeks about them selling out. Now I just wait until the night before and book with a local operator on the pier, which saved me $60 in Cozumel on my last trip and got me a smaller group of 8 instead of 40. Has anyone else switched to booking day-of, or do you still lock everything in early?

I've noticed this same thing with concert tickets and even rental cars. Booking early used to feel like the smart move, but now the prices just climb while you sit there watching, and the day-of stuff is often cheaper and less of a hassle. My brother booked a rental the morning we needed it in Phoenix and paid half what I did reserving two months out. Waiting till the last minute feels wrong after years of being told to plan ahead, but the math keeps proving it right.
