Saw a big port crane yard in Savannah and it changed my mind about older rigs
Went down to the Port of Savannah last month for a family thing and talked my way into watching the yard for an afternoon. Every single newer Liebherr crane had some electronic fault light blinking, but those old 1990s American cranes were hauling boxes nonstop. The operators told me the computer systems on the new ones need two techs just to reset a sensor, meanwhile the old rigs have a manual that fits in your pocket. I get that digital load indicators save lives, but we've added so many safety layers that we lost the ability to just run the machine. Anyone else work a job where the older equipment outperforms the new stuff on site more often than the manufacturers want to admit?
