Showerthought: a new client came in with a 3 week old box dye and I had to turn her down
A woman sat in my chair in Tempe two weeks ago with jet black box dye from a grocery store, and she wanted platinum highlights in one visit. I explained that the metallic salts in those dyes can react badly with bleach and turn hair into gum, which happened to a client of mine back in 2019 and cost her 8 inches of length. I told her I could do a strand test first, but she got upset and left a bad review saying I was just trying to upsell her. Here's the thing, most of us are not trying to scare you, we just know what happens when box dye meets lightener and we do not want your hair melting off in our chair. I will always strand test now, no matter how much someone pushes back, because one bad chemical cut is not worth the money. Has anyone else had a client freak out over a strand test, and how do you handle it without losing them?
The "metallic salts turned hair into gum" part made me wince because I have seen that exact mess, and no amount of explaining later fixes the eight inches you have to cut off. Turning her down probably felt awful in the moment, but you saved yourself a disaster in your chair and she just cannot see it yet. A strand test takes twenty minutes, and if someone will not give you twenty minutes, that tells you plenty about how the rest of the visit will go. You did right by her even if her review says otherwise.
