I quit doing roller sets on wet hair and my clients in Phoenix stopped complaining about frizz
For my first six years behind the chair I always set curls on soaking wet hair because that's how I was taught in beauty school back in 2013. Then a client with fine hair sat in my chair in July and her set fell flat before she even got to her car in the parking lot. I switched to 80 percent dry hair with a little foam and the curls hold shape way better, plus the whole service is faster. My old instructor would probably yell at me but I don't care, the proof is in the mirror. Anyone else make this switch or am I the only one late to it?
I tried the 80 percent dry thing for maybe 3 months and went right back to wet. Here in Dallas our humidity sits around 60 to 70 percent most of the year, so hair that starts dry just soaks up that moisture from the air and the set falls apart by lunch. With wet hair the water has to leave first, so the curl actually sets harder and holds longer for my clients. Maybe it works in Phoenix since it's dry there, but that trick doesn't travel well everywhere. If it's working for your chair, keep doing it, but I wouldn't tell every stylist to make the switch.
