I quit chasing 100% completion on every game and started just beating the main story, and honestly the hobby got fun again
Six months ago I had 340 hours in one open world game and realized I was doing chores, not playing. I used to clear every map marker and grab every collectible because some part of me felt like finishing the story without 100% didn't count. Now I beat the main quest, mess around with side stuff until I get bored, and move on to the next one. I went from finishing 4 games in a whole year to running through 11 since March, and I actually remember the stories now instead of just the checklist. Does anyone else feel weird the first time they skip a collectible, or is that just me?
Man, the weird part for me wasn't skipping collectibles, it was realizing the checklist was doing the opposite of what I thought. I figured 100% meant I got my money's worth, but then I did the math and I paid like 60 bucks for a game I stretched into 300 hours of boring map cleanup, so really I was paying myself less than 20 cents an hour to be miserable. The games where I just ran the story are the ones I still bring up to friends a year later, and the ones I grinded to full clear I honestly can't tell you a single thing about. The first skipped chest feels gross and then the second one is freedom.
