TIL a $20 USB boot drive saved my ass on a 2011 ThinkPad

Always thought recovery partitions were enough until a client's HDD died last Tuesday and the partition was toast. Grabbed a cheap USB stick with a live Linux ISO, pulled their files off before the drive fully gave out. Anyone else ditch recovery discs for a bootable USB as their go-to first move?
