A client's 2 AM email made me rethink my whole diagnostic flow

I used to jump straight to hardware swapping when a machine was slow, especially under load. Last month, a client in Austin sent me a novel at 2 AM about their POS system freezing every hour at their coffee shop. They mentioned they had installed some 'free optimization tool' off a popup, which I ignored at first. After I finally rolled back that software and cleaned up the startup entries, the issue vanished without touching a single component. It stung because I had already quoted them $180 for a RAM upgrade they didn't need. Now I always check for junkware and recent installs before I even open the case, and I ask clients what they added lately first. Has anyone else had a customer clue you in to a software fix when you were dead set on hardware?
