Lost comms on a North Sea job, had to figure it out fast

Two months ago I was on a dive in the North Sea near Aberdeen checking a riser clamp. At 45 meters my comms went dead, just static and then nothing. I had to fall back on hand signals with my standby diver and hope the surface crew understood the tugs. We finished the job but it took twice as long and my hands were frozen stiff waiting for the okay signals. My supervisor said the battery pack on the through-hull unit failed, no warning at all. Anyone else had a comms failure at depth and rigged a temporary fix that worked better than expected?

Man, I've had that happen twice now. First time I was just doing a hull inspection at 30 meters and the wire from the comms box corroded clean through inside the boot. I always carry a spare wire and some rubber splicing tape now, wrapped it around the break and it held long enough to get through the rest of the dive. The trick is to shove spare ends inside a dry glove before you go down.
