Question about how you decide what counts as a 'first appearance' when a character shows up in a single panel
I was at my local shop in Sacramento last Saturday and overheard two guys going back and forth about whether a certain book counts as a real first appearance since the character is only in one panel and doesn't even get a name yet. One guy said if the character is there and you can tell who it is, it counts, end of story. The other guy said no way, it only counts if the character is named or has a real role, and a cameo in the background is just a cameo. I stood there pretending to read a dollar bin book for like ten minutes because I honestly didn't know whose side I was on. I've been collecting for about seven years and I always assumed the rules were pretty clear, but now I'm second guessing my whole want list. It kind of matters to me because I just spent $40 on a book I thought was a first appearance, and now I'm not so sure. How do you all draw the line on a one panel cameo? Is it page count, being named, or just how it feels to you?
